Garrett: Six Months

February 27, 2014

This past month has flown right by! I feel like Garrett is growing and changing on the daily and I wish I could soak every moment of it up! Being at work for 14+ hours a day has been really difficult on me this month. I feel like he's already so different by the time I return home. What I wouldn't give to spend all my days with him. I seriously tear up when I think about the fact that my little boy is six months old. That's 1/2 a year people, a whole 1/2 year old. Time is flying and I wish desperately that it would slow down!
Update: My dear sweet, little baby is really turning into a curious, little boy. He insists on watching everything going on around him and doesn't like to feel left out for a single minute.

Stats & Recent Appointment: While he doesn't see his pedi for another three weeks I did my best to do a little measuring at home. First let me tell you what a challenge it is to weight and measure that little wiggle worm! Momma needed a nap afterwards! Needless to say the measurements might be a bit off-but I did my best! He's measuring in around 28 1/2 inches for length and a whopping 21 pounds. We have got one big boy on our hands!

Features: My dear, sweet, adorable boy! I melt just looking at him! I may be 178% biased but I really feel that he might be the most adorable baby ever. He still has his bald oval in the back of his head and his hair certainly seems to be getting lighter. His eyes are still a blue sort of color though I swear I catch glimpses of green & brown at times. I'm dying to know what color eyes he'll end up having!

Sleep: Will this ever get easier? We've had four nights in the last two weeks that where fairly good on the sleep scale. The first three actually occurred all in the same week (last week) and really had my thinking that maybe he was getting the hang of the whole sleep thing....no such luck. The first was 9pm-2am & then 2am-5am. The second was 9pm-4am & then 4am-7am. The third was 9pm-4am. The fourth was actually just two nights ago. He slept from 9pm-5am...8 whole hours! That's is the longest he's consecutively slept since being born!

For awhile he was consistent about sleeping from 9pm-10pm, 10pm-2am, 2am-4am & then 4am-6am. Then he cut out the 10pm awakening so he was sleeping 9pm-2am, 2am-4am, 4am-6am.

Lately however he's been getting sleepy around 7pm so we do jammies and bottle then. He'll doze a bit but won't actually fall asleep until 9pm. He's up then at 11pm, 1am, 4am and then up for the day at 6am. Now, if he was still breastfeeding I'd totally understand the frequent wake periods but he's been formula feed for the past three weeks. And, the part that really gets me is that he doesn't even wake up to eat. I'd say about 50% of the time he'll take a bottle and eat anywhere between 3-5ounces. Otherwise he wants nothing to do with it! He simply wakes up screaming, and I'm talking like "momma I'm unhappy, come here right now!" screaming. I've attempted letting him cry it out but he will scream and scream and then scream some more.He usually isn't up all that long when he wakes, about a half hour or so.

I feel horrible for the poor boy. I know that he needs his sleep but I don't have any clue as to why he wakes up screaming so many times in the night. We'd thought his reflux was bothering him so we have it sleeping propped up but that hasn't made a difference. Anyone else experience this with their baby?

As for naps...everyday is a hit or a miss here too. He naps fairly well for me on the days I'm home with him but my husband has really been struggling. He usually naps from 9am-10am, 12pm-2pm and then again around 4 or 5pm. We've tried cutting that last nap out in hopes to get him sleeping better but that only had him up more frequently at night.

I'm really struggling with only getting 3-5 hours of sleep a night. It is especially hard on work days. Though I'm learning to function it really gets the best of me sometimes.

Eating: We made it to 23 weeks of age with breastfeeding. My supply had trickled to just about nothing and while I attempted to increase it again it wasn't working. It was a hard day when I finally decided to quit both for Garrett and I. There was something so relaxing about it for the both of us. He's doing well on formula though. He's taking a bottle about every four hours and he averages 4-5 ounces per bottle. At night he'll really tank up and sometimes drink anywhere from 8 to 12 ounces. We've been trying new foods about every four days but sometimes we get a little behind on our schedule too. So far he's tried and loved avocado, pears and mangos. He wasn't so keen on the butternut squash though. And when we tried sweet peas he was just plain miserable. Up next is sweet potatoes and then bananas!  I have to say though, he really eats like a champ! Even the foods he's not in love with he'll eat...we just get more faces & spits outs than usual!

Diapering: Still in size three's though they seem to be getting snug. We had about 1/2 box left so I went ahead and picked up a box of size four for when the threes are gone. It baffles my mind that he's wearing size four diapers already! I didn't wear them until I was well, well over a year!

Clothing: We have a select handful of 6-9 month stuff he fits in but he's wearing mostly 12 month clothing. I've had to do some serious shopping to get him warm 12 month clothing because everything I had was more spring/summer stuff. I keep my eyes open everywhere we go for clearance clothes for him because I find myself packing away 2 or 3 more things everyday! I can't wait until the rummage sales start!

Social: For the most part he'll hang out with just about anyone as long as I'm near. He is attached to momma lately! When we're out and about he loves to look around and babble to get people's attention. It take him a bit to warm up sometimes. Like last night we went and did our taxes and he sat clung to my side starting at the lady for like 15 minutes. After that he kept screaming to get her attention and smiled non-stop at her. I was so thankful there was no one else there getting their taxes done because his lungs sure are loud! He is such a funny little guy and love, loves to be the center of my attention! He'll shriek like mad when I walk out of the room or look away for a minute!

Nicknames: Monkey, monkey butt, squirtchunk, big boy, little love, Mr. Magoo

Likes: Eating! Bath time continues to be a favorite and he gets so excited when the water starts running! (And disappointed when I run water for dishes and don't let him in!) He loves his jumper, Sophie and any toy that lights up and makes music! He also loves to scratch different surfaces is constantly running his hands over different textures. He also LOVES music! If there's ever a crabby time we either put music on or sing to him & he instantly stops!

Dislikes: Being warm, sitting still, having his hair dried, being stationary in his car seat & getting his face wiped off.
My Dear Sweet Garrett,

Mommy has mixed emotions today. It is so fun to see you growing and learning but it is so tough to see you turn from a baby into a little boy. You are growing like a weed and I have a hard time remember that you where once my "small" 8pound 6ounce baby! You are my largest blessing sweet boy! I look forward to your smiles and silly giggles each and everyday! You have made life more worth it than I ever imagined possible and I am thankful for every little moment I get to spend with you! I know too soon you'll be toddeling around on your own & that you won't need me to carry you about. Too soon you'll drift off to dream land on your own and you won't need snuggles in my arms. Too soon you'll make friends and won't want to hang out with momma all day. Too soon you'll be big and grown. But, my sweet babe you will always, always be my baby. I love you more than you'll ever know.

Love & loads of kisses,
Momma
And, in celebration of Garrett's six month birthday I'm sharing his birth story over at Mama & Mou. If you haven't read it yet be sure to check it out, it's my very favorite story!

I'm The Kinda Girl

February 25, 2014

I saw this floating around blog land and thought it'd be a nice way to share some more little tidbits about myself to all the new lovely faces around here lately.

I'm the kinda girl who...

+ is almost too type A. I stress about things not being perfect, organized and tidy. To the point where it literally has made me sick before. It's ridiculous and I try to ignore it but it just doesn't work.

+ loves to eat. If eating where an Olympic sport I'd take gold for sure.

+ hates being the center of attention.

+ checks her phone FAR too often!

+ really shouldn't watch scary movies before bedtime because they give me freaky nightmares every dang time. With that said, I only watch scary movies at night time because they seem much scarier then.

 + curses far too much!

+ loves to make lists. I think that this goes hand in hand with the first one but who really knows. I love the feeling I get from crossing things off of a to-do list and watching all those tasks slowly get crossed out. Call me strange but it's a super feeling of accomplishment when I can take my crossed out list and trash it.

+ sets four alarms to get me up for work & I still have problems getting out of bed sometimes

+ wishes I was more fashionable. But I'd rather spend my money on Garrett or my husband than myself.

+ will go broke buying my kiddos books. I could count on one hand the toys that I've bought for Garrett but books? Well let's just say my Amazon cart is overflowing with books that I want to order him and his shelves are already filled! I just can't help it though. I want him to have books for every holiday, season, national ice cream day and all!

+ has two dogs but isn't a fan of being a pet owner

+ believes $10,000 in the bank is a necessity

+ feels that all clothing hangers should be white. For some reason colored hangers freak me out. We have a few that are brown, black and blue and I"ll only hang my husband's clothes on them.

+ took 17 credits my first semester of collage and was working about 30 hours a week. I rarely studied and still pulled off A's in every class. School just was something that came easy to me. Until I got into nursing school that is...

+ gets super crabby when meals are late/skipped and when it's past my bedtime.

+ LOVES decorating for just about every holiday! My husband always thought I was strange but now I have Garrett & claim I'm doing it for him :)

+ hate, hate, HATES feet!

+ loves planning parties & wishes she could do it professionally!

DIY Baby Food: Schedule

February 24, 2014

Shortly after Garrett turned four months he really seemed to be wanting more in the food department. He was eating 5ozs about two hours {half formula, half breast milk} and still seemed to be wanting more. He'd reach for our food whenever we ate and cry hysterically. It broke my heart to see him wanting something and not be able to have it. We weren't scheduled to see our pedi for another two to three weeks but I really felt like I should trust my momma instincts. It was around that time we decided to give cereal a try with that thought that if he hated it we would stop and try again closer to six months. We started with Earth's Best Rice Cereal and it was a total go! After about a month of that we tried Earth's Best Multi Grain Oatmeal which he loved even more! At that point I knew he was more than ready for foods so I whipped up a little schedule of new foods for him.

I'd read everywhere to give each new food a few attempts as new textures and flavors can take some getting use to for babies. Plus you want to be sure they don't have any allergies. So, I worked out a plan to try each new food for four days in a row, if it went well with no signs of an allergy we'd move onto the next food. I'd also read many things that mention giving veggies before fruits as some believe that after having sweet fruits a baby might reject the veggies. With further research I've found many articles saying that the order you give new foods does not make a difference at all! Therefore I decided to mix fruits and veggies to give him a variety of flavors, textures & foods.

I plan to do posts on the preparation of each food separate to give you some tips and tricks I've learned (and to recap how Garrett felt about each new food) so for now I'm simply going to just share our schedule with you.

Friday Letters

February 21, 2014

It's been some time since I've done a round of Friday Letters so I thought I'd go ahead and do just that today.
Dear Friday: I'm a bit crabby over the fact that I have to work any day today. Never mind the fact that I just had two days off. That doesn't count right now. Working like seriously cramps my style. Anyone else with me on that one? Dear Scale: When I set out to loose baby weight I wanted to do just that and nothing more. Thanks to breastfeeding & Advocare I managed to accomplish that in just 8 weeks but I'm happy where I'm at now so you can stop the dropping anytime now! I'd rather not be back in double digit weights! Dear Summer: Where are you? It was 40* here yesterday and the last I heard we're due for a snow storm today. How in the heck does that work? We did enjoy the weather yesterday though and I even took Garrett outside for his first encounter with snow. He didn't know what to make of it at all and pretty much flat out refused to sit in it. Silly boy! Dear House My Swooing Over: Please don't sell. Do whatever you need to but please, please don't sell. We'd love to own you but have to finish up a few more things on our current home first! Dear Readers: If you haven't yet noticed I've got a bit of fun going on for you! My newest Etsy (and small business) Extravanga went live last week! The last time I did one of these was before Garrett was born and that was centered around all things baby. This time there's a few things for baby but most of it will be for momma! Stayed tuned as I plan to introduce a new shop each week or so! If you missed the beginning shops you can check them out here and here. Dear G: How in the world are you growing so quickly? I look at your adorable self and can hardly believe how much you're changing! I remember the days when you where content to lay and sleep on my chest all day and now you want to go, go go! I know that I tell you fifty million times everyday but I love you little bean with all my heart and soul. You and daddy are my greatest blessings in life!

The Vintage Honey Shop Review

February 20, 2014

Teething has been a battle for our little Garrett & there are days when he is beyond miserable. His poor little cheeks turned bright red, he drools like a Saint Bernard and he has the toughest time getting comfortable. And of course he wants to chew on everything! We'd collected numerous different teethers at our baby showers, through gifts & our own purchases and could never find one that he really enjoyed. Most of them he'd chew on for a few minutes and then toss aside. Or they where entirely too large for his little hands to hang onto and for his little mouth to chew. As a momma I felt horrible for him.

I stumbled upon The Vintage Honey Shop one day and thought their necklaces where just beyond adorable! A few days later they posted that they where looking for some bloggers to review products! So, they graciously sent me a necklace to review! When I got the package in the mail I was super excited to give it a try with Garrett! I was hoping and praying that it would help him find some relief! Opening up the package made me even more excited! I mean seriously...look at this adorable packaging! Every little details was thought out and absolutely perfect!
After I squealed about the package far longer than necessary (my husband was totally sick of hearing "But really? How freaking adorable is this packaging?") I opened up the package to find the most darling necklace and information cards. Included with the necklace was a card describing their products, washing instructions and more. So thought out and well prepared!
I'd thought to myself then...well they've got adorable packaging & products but will Garrett really like to chomp on this?! And let me tell you friends-The Vintage Honey Shop does not disappoint! Garrett is OBSESSED with this necklace! He will chomp and chomp and then chomp some more! He's actually SO in love with it that every time I take it off/put it away he screams his little head off! This necklace goes everywhere with us these days as it is a sure bet to keep him happy & out of pain! There are times I'll twist it around my wrist too so he can chomp it while he's sitting down on my lap. Either way-necklace or bracelet he loves it! To say I'm pleased with this necklace is a total understatement and I'm totally suggesting that every momma & baby should have one!
Another wonderful thing about The Vintage Honey Shop is that they have SO many different necklaces! Perfect for any momma, any outfit and any baby! Here are a few others I'm loving:
Melissa & Jennifer are so sweet that they'd love to offer my readers 10% any order! Just head on over here, fill your cart & use the code STORMY for 10% off! The coupon code is good until Friday, February 28th! Happy shopping loves! And happy drooling baby loves!

Also, don't forget to enter the Nothing But Glisten giveaway! One of you lucky ladies is going to win a two heart initial necklace!

1st Weekend Away + 1st Drink In A Year + World Market = Valentine's 2014

February 19, 2014

As I mentioned here Valentine's Day 2013 was an extremely special one for us! The day we let everyone in on our secret will forever be a great one! Having Garrett here this year was super exciting though because it gave me two Valentine's and let's face it-kissing on two boys is always better than one right?! ;) I had to work this year on Valentine's Day which bummed me out because I was totally looking forward to smacking Garrett full of lip stick kisses and taking about two million photos. Steve did however have a few things up his sleeve to make the day/weekend special despite working though.

It started Friday around noon I was at work getting my patient's caught up and settled so I could grab some lunch. Our PCA called & told me there was someone up front who needed to talk to me. I wandered up there and found husband & baby waiting for me with flowers. Heart melting! I love getting little visits from my boys! They stayed and had lunch with me until baby fell asleep (apparently I'm boring?!) Then the husband surprised me with a little adult get away over the weekend for Valentine's Day. Though it meant leaving my baby for the first time overnight it was SO nice to have time away with the hubster too.

I have to give a huge props to Steve. He booked the hotel, planned some activities all on his own...major points. And, he kept it a secret too right up until we pulled into the parking lot at the hotel. We dropped the pups off at the doggy hotel for the weekend and then dropped Garrett off at my parents. They seemed over the moon about getting to spend some time with him so that certainly made leaving him overnight FAR easier! And then we where off! At this point I was still clueless about our destination though I spent about half the ride trying to guess it! It wasn't somewhere too far from home but it's somewhere we hadn't been in awhile & somewhere we typically don't vacation so it was a pleasant surprise! I could type a recap for the whole thing but I think I'll share the few photos I took & let them do the talking :)
Hitting up the gym soon after arriving at the hotel..

Wandering around Madison. Snapped a few photos of the capital.

My first drink in over a year! Half way through and I was already feeling buzzed.
#greatdanepub #mommyhoodmademealightweight

Enjoying a cozy breakfast for two.

Can't go to Mad-town without a stop at World Market...where I want everything!

So, it was a short, close to home vacation but it was wonderful just the same! We came home, picked up our snuggle bug (who didn't seem to miss us one bit) and got loads of enquirers about the possibility of there being a Baby M #2 after our weekend away. All I have to say is not yet friends, not yet.

Valentine's Day-Changes That One Year Brings

February 14, 2014

There's one Valentine's Day that sticks out in my mind as the best to date, Valentine's Day 2013. My husband and I had just found out we where pregnant and had our first ultrasound just a few weeks prior. We'd taken some adorable {if I do say so myself} announcement photos and somehow managed to keep my bun in the oven status secret for many, many weeks. We'd told our family and our close friends but we where itching to tell the rest of the world. So, on Valentine's Day 2013 we posted a few photos to Facebook and I typed up this little post and BAM! The secret was out! The whole wide world knew about my growing boobs bump and it was quite possibly one of the best days ever! Baby M was already so loved just as a tiny bean in my belly!

Now on Valentine's Day 2014, he's 5 1/2 months old & as energetic as ever! I can't believe how much our lives have changed, for the better. He is the most exhausting kind of fun I could ever imagine and we are so, SO blessed to have him in our lives! It is amazing that the changes that just one year can bring!

Happy Valentine's Daddy to my two handsome men! I love you both!

Valentine's Day: To Love Or To Hate

February 13, 2014

I've found that Valentine's Day is generally a loved holiday or a hated holiday. I personally like the idea. Since having Garrett my husband and I have very little alone time and haven't really gotten to do anything just the two of us so having a night to ourselves will be nice & relaxing! It will be nice just to focus on each other! Today I'm sharing some lovely ladies with you and what they love {or hate} about this ever mushy gushy holiday!

I'm Megan and I write at Rivers and Roads. I don't really celebrate Valentine's Day. It's not that I have anything against it, I just choose not to spend a lot of money on it. However, my dad gets me flowers every year. It's something he really doesn't have to do, but he continues to every single Valentine's Day. It's very sweet. :)
I'm Jessie from Jessie Jo At Home. What I like about Valentine's Day is not exactly all about the mushy gushy stuff. I enjoy that it's a special day for my husband and I to go out to a nice dinner together, or enjoy quiet time during a movie together, don't get me wrong. But I just think sometimes it's TOO much about roses and chocolates and all that stuff, almost like a competition between girls on social media. Now that the girls are getting older, especially Charlie, I love getting crafty with them. We have made hand designed and colored Valentine's for her grandparents and sent them in the mail. We also decorated our house with fun little paper hearts. It was so fun do do together and she was soo excited!  But either way, Happy Valentine's Day! ;)
Hey! I'm Jasmine & I write over at The Jasmine Maria! I'm not really into Valentine's Day. Well maybe when I was married I was but even then it was never perfect. Lol I've only had one perfect Valentine's Day date. It was last year with one of my guy friends. I had posted on Facebook about a week before Valentine's Day..something about how I'll be spending Valentine's Day with my boys. He had messaged me and asked me if I was doing anything special on that mushy lovely day, I said no. He asked me to go out with him on a fun date I said yes. He showed up in a cute suit because he just gotten off work. I was dressed in skinny jeans, boots, and a long sleeve shirt. I felt under-dressed. He was a gent for sure. Got me a teddy bear, took me to dinner and the comedy club here in town. Of course he walked me to my door and kissed me. That was the best Valentine's Day date I've ever had.  I'm single now and I'm looking forward to working and spending it with my boys.
I'm Shayla of Moons & Junes. I am just not a Valentines Day gal, traditionally. I mean, I like being appreciated and doted on as much as the next girl, but I feel that Valentines Day is just so commercial. I don't really like roses, and those boxes of candy.. You just never know if what kind of filling you're getting, and I'm allergic to coconut, so that can sometimes be terrible, and don't get me started on the stuffed animals. I'm a 26 year old woman, what am I suppose to do with a stuffed puppy that says "I wuff you"?  I'm just not into it. Whatever the equivalent of "bah- humbug" for Valentines Day is- that's what I'm saying. But when my husband rolls up with a $5.00 box of Little Caesars, crazy bread, and says he got a sitter so we can finish watching the current episode of Friday Night Lights (we're way behind, I know) that's when Valentines Day starts warming my heart a bit. ;)

I've always loved Valentine's day simply because its all about love. And who doesn't love love?! It's a day i have always used to tell the ones i love how wonderful they are. Of course I do that on more then just V-day but I always do a little something extra. Especially now that my little ones are getting older, it makes these little holidays a little extra special and we always try to do something fun for them! We bake cookies, do fun crafts, and enjoy lots of laughs.

And, don't forget to enter the Nothing But Glisten Giveaway to win yourself a little something for Valentine's Day!
